Britney Spears “Circus”

Move over Barnum & Bailey, because Britney fans are certainly calling this “The Greatest Show on Earth”. Welcome to the big top with Britney Spears “Circus”, her sixth studio album. With three singles out so far, “Circus” has all the hallmarks of the roaring comeback Jive Records was hoping for, especially after her lukewarm performance on “Blackout”, released in 2007.

First off was “Womanizer”, released in September, 2008. With opening bars out of a Tarantino fight scene, it quickly moves into an upbeat rhythm and a tune just a little reminiscent of “So Happy Together” by The Turtles. Of course, given the title of the song, happiness is definitely not a factor. I too would be unhappy to sing that monotonous refrain but fortunately it jumps back into the upbeat tune from the beginning. All in all, an OK single.

Second was the title track “Circus”, released in October, 2008. True to form, it has all the requisite elements for a fun modern pop song; a funky, highly dance-worthy rhythm, catchy lyrics (although a bit repetitive in the chorus), and of course, the highly synthesized voice of Ms. Spears herself (I think). After a (blessedly) short stretch of fairway pipe organ, I found my toes tapping and my head doing that Egyptian slide thing. With the seductively hard electronic edge running underneath the lyrics, I could believe her promise to “make it hot” on the dance floor.

Throw in a bit of controversy (with Ms. Spears, how could you not?) and you have the third single, “If You Seek Amy”, released in January 2009. What’s the controversy? Well, let’s just say that when you sing the title, it spells something that rhymes with Buck… you get the picture. Combined with the breathy little girl voice we heard on “Baby One More Time” back in 1998, the result is sure to titillate listeners & confound censors trying to figure out when a swear is REALLY a swear.

All clowning aside, however, I was pleasantly surprised by this latest effort by the tabloid’s favorite Queen of Pop. Danceable, fun, & delightfully wicked, Britney Spears “Circus” pushes past the media frenzy of her past & promises to generate even more for her future.
