Christopher Maurice “Chris” Brown (born May 5, 1989) is an American hip hop, pop and R&B singer-songwriter, dancer, music video director and actor.
Although he started out as an aspiring rapper, Chris Brown’s early discovery of his singing talent inspired him to follow in the footsteps of influences like Michael Jackson, Tevin Campbell, and Usher. The 16-year-old Virginia native made his debut in summer 2005 with the Scott Storch-produced, Juelz Santana collaboration “Run It.”
It’s only been a few months since Chris Brown made his debut, and already the teen has achieved success that would make showbiz veterans envious.
The album’s lead single was “Run It!”, which features rapper Juelz Santana, and was produced by Scott Storch. It received continuous airplay (topping the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay), and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for five weeks. It replaced “Gold Digger” by Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx, and was itself replaced by Mariah Carey’s “Don’t Forget About Us”. It also topped Billboard Pop 100. Other singles released from the album include “Yo (Excuse Me Miss)”, another U.S. top ten hit for Brown, as well as “Gimme That”, released as a remix featuring rapper Lil Wayne, and the fourth single, “Say Goodbye”, which peaked at number ten in the U.S. The fifth and final single from the album, “Poppin’”, charted outside the U.S. top forty.
Besides his smash No. 1 hit “Run It,” the quick-footed R&B singer has posted two other hits on the charts, his self-titled album went platinum and he’s one of the most squeal-inducing performers on tour this year.
On August 17, 2006, Brown and Ne-Yo co-headlined the 28-city Up Close and Personal Tour. Shortly after ending his summer tour with Ne-Yo, Brown quickly began production for his second studio album, Exclusive, which was set to be released on August 28, 2007 until it was pushed to November 6, 2007. The album debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums selling nearly 300,000 copies in its first week domestically, +140,000 copies more than his debut solo album.
On December 4, 2007, Chris released the third single from “Exclusive”, entitled “With You”, a song produced by Stargate. So far, “With You” has reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has entered the charts in various countries around the world, becoming one of Brown’s most successful released to date, entering the top ten in Croatia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Philippine, Singapore, Bulgaria, Canada, USA, Cyprus, Ireland, UK, Malta, Malaysia, Australia, and the United World Chart.
